The use of perennial grasses such as miscanthus and switchgrass for biofuel production increases demand for water, according to a study from the University of Illinois. Miscanthus and switchgrass have more surface area than corn, meaning they release more water through transpiration and absorb more water from the ground, the study showed. "While we are looking for solutions for energy through bioenergy crops, dependence on water gets ignored, and water can be a significant limiting factor," said Praveen Kumar, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UI.
