Far Country Animal Hospital in Palmer, Alaska, began operating a canine blood bank five years ago to provide supplies for its own patients. Today, as the state's only blood bank for dogs, the facility also sells blood from a group of regular donors to other veterinary practices in the state. To give blood, dogs must weigh at least 50 pounds, be healthy and have the gentle disposition needed to keep them quiet and still for the 15 minutes it takes to collect the blood.
