Tough requirements for receiving a certification to teach speech-language pathology in Wisconsin have made it difficult to fill spots left by retiring teachers. As a result, there are only 1,900 speech-language pathologists to serve the state's 32,000 students with a primary speech-language disability. Speech-language teachers in the state have to complete a master's degree, and their skills also are in demand in other areas outside of schools.
