As the country commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, parents should talk with their children about loss and grief and seek to lessen their children's anxiety by reassuring them that they are safe, said Dr. Steven Krug, chair of the AAP's Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council. If a school is planning to have 9/11 anniversary events, Krug advised parents to ask teachers and administrators about details of the program in order to "fill in the gaps and offer a consistent message" to their children.
