Students do not know enough about the country's civil-rights movement, according to a report from the Southern Poverty Law Center that places the blame primarily on states' academic standards. "Across the country, state educational standards virtually ignore our civil rights history," states the report, which assigns 35 states an F grade for requiring little teaching on the topic. The report found less emphasis on civil rights outside of the South or in regions with smaller black populations.
