Formative assessment, in which students receive feedback and evaluate and track their progress, can improve students' writing skills, according to a new report from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Researchers suggest that such writing assessments be aligned with the Common Core State Standards in order to be effective. The report also suggests that when assessing students' work, teachers grade papers anonymously, consider multiple samples of work and take other steps to ensure fairness.
