Columnist Joe Sharkey explains that since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the airline industry has changed in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. The number of passengers is actually slightly higher now than it was in 2000, an indication that the industry is at least recovering, if not thriving. Fares also remain at "historically low levels," and airlines have introduced ancillary fees in the past decade.
