Alabama Toll Facilities Inc. and Ameri-Metro announced plans to build "the largest privately financed inland transportation complex in the nation." The $7 billion proposal calls for building 300 miles of toll road and rail tracks, an airport and a 4,000-acre inland port that will have retail shops, a hotel and an evacuation center. Some are skeptical. "There's a level of detail that needs to be worked out between the state and local governments that might be involved in a project of this nature that hasn't happened yet," said Tony Harris, a spokesman for the Alabama Department of Transportation.
