Crews will begin drilling alongside Boston's Big Dig tunnel next month, to determine the cause and the best way to fill a gap that has formed below it. Crews will bore holes about four inches across and 100 feet deep to collect soil samples that should indicate the extent to which the earth beneath the tunnel has shifted. "Hopefully, from the comparative two sample results, we'll be able to start to theorize what's causing the excessive settlement that we've been recording," said Massachusetts Highway Administrator Frank DePaola.
