A recent outbreak of salmonella that was resistant to at least four antibiotics stemmed from the overuse of antibiotics in livestock production, writes veterinarian Gail Hansen, who served as the chief epidemiologist and public health veterinarian in Kansas for 13 years. Hansen argues for the Food and Drug Administration to craft rules on sensible antibiotic use in livestock, to protect the public health.
