High-fat meals in patients with type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance can cause lipopolysaccharide endotoxins to easily pass through the intestinal walls, which could expose these people to 126% more endotoxins, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. Experts said eating small but frequent meals, as these patients are told to do, could lead to a "leaky gut" effect and elevated exposure to endotoxins that expedites pathogenic conditions if the foods are high in fat.
