Ham radio operators in Orange County, N.Y., are willing to set up at a 9-1-1 center in Sullivan County to help relay emergency calls when phone lines go dead, which is what happened during Hurricane Irene. Irwin Litt, president of the Southern Catskill Amateur Radio Society, says Orange County ham radio operators have space in the 9-1-1 center and operate under the Division of Emergency Management, which put them in position to also help the Red Cross and a local hospital during the hurricane.
