Coping with catastrophe requires collaboration and communication, not just a command-and-control leadership approach, says Joseph Pfeifer, who helped lead the 9/11 rescue and evacuation effort in the World Trade Center's North Tower. "Leaders during a catastrophic event do more than just manage the event. They do three other things: they connect, collaborate and coordinate," Pfeifer says.
