When Colorado State University veterinarian Ross Palmer met Cooper, a Great Dane puppy with a deformed hind leg that might need amputation, he decided to try a little-used device borrowed from a colleague in Italy. Dr. Palmer used a jack that allowed two pieces of bone to grow back together. The device successfully promoted about 3 inches of growth in Cooper's tibia and the limb is now only 1 inch shorter than it should be; Cooper is mobile and uses the limb fairly normally.
