Some Michigan lawmakers propose adopting a version of the parent-trigger law that would allow a majority of parents or teachers to convert a public school to a charter. The Republican lawmakers, who introduced seven bills that would reform education in the state, also are seeking to privatize public-school teaching jobs and eliminate caps on charters. Supporters say the proposals will give parents more control over education and provide more choices for students. Opponents, however, say the legislation puts too much emphasis on charter schools to improve education.
