A 150-head Montana cattle herd is under quarantine after six of the animals tested positive for brucellosis, a disease that causes weight loss and spontaneous abortions in cattle. The incidence of brucellosis cases has decreased over the past decade, but recent easing of government regulations related to culling and interstate transport, as well as perpetuation of the disease in bison and elk, make brucellosis a persistent threat to the Montana cattle industry.
