An increasing number of U.S. preschoolers diagnosed with depression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, among other conditions, are now being prescribed psychiatric medications. Experts say that such drugs are not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in children younger than 6. "We have very little research to show how psychiatric medications affect the developing nervous system, for instance," said Dr. Mark Olfson, a psychiatrist at Columbia University.
