Drilling in New York state's portion of the Marcellus Shale could generate a $2.5 billion economic boost and close to 54,000 jobs, according to a report from the state Department of Environmental Conservation. "DEC's No. 1 priority is to protect the state's drinking water and environment in concert with exploring options to safely and efficiently extract the state's natural gas," said Joseph Martens, DEC commissioner.
