In the wake of 9/11, AVMA's Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams and FEMA search and rescue dogs worked alongside human first responders to find trapped people and bodies. In reflecting on those events 10 years later, author Wendy Diamond reminds owners to be prepared for a large-scale disaster and offers tips including ensuring a pet wears a collar with identification, a carrier is readily available for small pets, that at least a week's supply of any needed medication is on hand and a plan is in place for someone else to watch the pet in case of an emergency.
