Scientists at UCLA's Center for Tropical Research found that pigs moving freely between African villages were actively infected or had been infected with influenza virus H1N1 that is essentially identical to the strain found in people in San Diego last year. "Africa is ground zero for a new pandemic," said Thomas Smith, the center's director and senior author of the research. "Many people are in poor health there, and disease can spread very rapidly without authorities knowing about it."
