The St. Louis Zoo is launching the Institute for Conservation Medicine, led by veterinarian and epidemiologist Sharon Deem, which will study the interface of animal and human disease around the world. The institute's goal is identify emerging diseases and stop their spread in order to protect human and animal life. "There has been a lot of focus on human health and wellness and domestic animal health," said zoo President Jeffrey Bonner. "Wildlife health has not received the same attention, but that is finally starting to change."
