A study in Pediatrics found that the rate of abusive head trauma among children younger than 5 increased from 8.9 per year per 100,000 children prior to the recession to 14.7 per 100,000 after December 2007. Dr. Rachel P. Berger, co-author of the study, said cuts to programs for babies and young children have added to the stress felt by disadvantaged parents.
