A new study in "Educational Researcher" discovered that teachers who left the field after three or four years experienced a drop in performance in their final year, compared with other educators who continued teaching. The researchers looked at teachers in North Carolina between 2004-05 and 2008-09 and evaluated their students' test scores through a value-added method. The researchers found that teacher effectiveness increased significantly in their second year on the job, but seemed to flatline after their third year in the classroom.
