Instructional coach David Ginsburg offers suggestions for calling on students at random -- saying that cold-calling is preferable to choral responses or asking students to raise their hands. He suggests teachers call on students evenly, keep students on their toes by sometimes asking one student multiple questions and ask questions that students should reasonably be able to answer. Ginsburg also suggests teachers ask questions and then call on students, so that other students pay attention to the questions as well.
