AT&T will present a string of Long-Term Evolution-based smartphones beginning in the fourth quarter that will be thinner and use less energy than previous devices, says Ralph de la Vega, the head of the carrier's wireless and consumer unit. In an interview, he pointed to what he termed circuit-switch fallback in describing the phones' technology, saying they will roll back to using the circuit-switch-based 3G network when outside 4G coverage areas.
