Public School 75 is the first New York City school to receive a HealthierUS School Award after students took up the challenge to eat more fruits and vegetables with, as fifth-grader Yaritza Zaniga put it, a "can't knock it until you try it" attitude. Registered dietitian and parent Ellie Krieger led the campaign for more nutritious lunches and said that while there is a set menu for city schools, schools can customize it to include healthier foods.
People with chronic back pain who attended yoga or stretching classes for 12 weeks reported improved functioning and fewer symptoms, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Data from a survey of 1,878 students ages 14 to 18 in the Boston revealed that students who drink more than five cans of nondiet soft drinks a week were 9% to 15% more likely to be more aggressive compared with those who drank fewer soft drinks. Among those students who consumed 14 cans of soft drink a week, 58% had shown violence toward peers, 43% carried a gun or knife, and 27% had been violent toward a partner, compared with 35%, 23% and 15%, respectively, among those who had zero or one soft drink a week, researchers said. The study appears in the journal Injury Prevention.

Food trucks also have set the bar higher, as have farmers markets, which make it easier to source locally and in-season.
