Concrete wave breakers could be the answer to Audubon's Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries erosion issues and could protect Sunken Island, part of the Alafia Banks Bird Sanctuary. The 5-foot-tall concrete pyramids that each weigh 8,100 pounds, are designed to last a century, according to Tom Brown, chief executive officer of Living Shoreline Solutions, the designer of the pyramids. "We've been through Category 4 and Category 5 hurricanes with these things [in other locations] and they haven't moved," said Brown.
