People with a moderate risk of heart disease should consider going beyond cholesterol screenings and get a C-reactive protein test, a panel of specialists recommended in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. CRP levels are a marker for inflammation and are linked to blood vessel plaque, and the Women's Health Study found that CRP was better at predicting coronary events than cholesterol readings.
