Education officials are seeking to close the books on more than $800 billion in economic-stimulus funding allocated to states and districts in 2009. With a portion of the money still unspent or unclaimed, at least nine states are expected to apply for waivers allowing them extra time to spend Title I funding designated for disadvantaged students. The existence of unspent funds, however, may hinder support for new education spending proposed as part of President Barack Obama's latest jobs bill.
