A study of mice revealed that a certain gene controls a protein called tomosyn-2, which appeared to inhibit insulin secretion in the pancreas. Experts compared diabetes-resistant and diabetes-susceptible mice and noted a single amino acid difference that thwarted tomosyn-2 in resistant mice, which enabled them to produce sufficient amounts of insulin. "It's too early for us to know how relevant this gene will be to human diabetes, but the concept of negative regulation is one of the most interesting things to come out of this study and that very likely applies to humans," study lead author Alan Attie said.
