A coalition of religious leaders and national anti-LGBT groups have begun to raise money and strategize in an effort to block a marriage equality bill in the 2012 session of the Maryland Legislature. "We're not a hate group. This is not just a few preachers who are bigots," said the Rev. Errol Gilliard Sr., a member of Progressive Clergy and Laity in Action. Gilliard said he supports civil unions for same-sex couples, but recordings have been found of at least one of his anti-gay sermons.
