Two new low-cost alternatives to Apple's iPad tablet computer were released last week with the intention of providing new access to technology for students who otherwise could not afford it. The $35 Aakash tablet is expected to allow unprecedented access to e-texts and other digital resources for thousands of students in India. Another device, the solar-powered I-slate, is set to be priced at less than $50 and offers a digital version of the handheld blackboards used by many children around the world.
