The Missouri Department of Transportation will experiment with a new cement mix fortified with "a photo-catalytic additive of titanium dioxide" that can "eat" smog by utilizing the sun's energy to decompose its components and discharge it into the air as nitrogen and carbon dioxide. MoDOT believes it is the first time the additive is being used in the U.S. Since the titanium dioxide additive is costly, MoDOT will use a paving technique that uses only a thin layer of the new mix on top of the usual concrete slabs.
