Transplanting neural stem cells from the hippocampus and olfactory bulb to the pancreas helped improve insulin production and reduce blood glucose levels in rats with diabetes, according to a study in EMBO Molecular Medicine. Experts said using the patients' own neural stem cells may address shortages in insulin-producing cells without the need for gene transfer to bolster diabetes treatment.
