School meals offered by the National School Lunch Program are more likely to contain fruit, vegetables and dairy, while homemade lunches on average are more likely to contain snacks high in sugar or fat and non-100% fruit juice, according to a study of second-graders in Texas. The findings, presented at an Obesity Society meeting, suggest intervention might be needed to improve the nutritional value of homemade lunches, the study's lead author said.
