Some school districts in the Washington, D.C., region are stepping up their use of digital textbooks in the classroom, a change aimed at reducing costs for schools and offering more up-to-date resources for students. Officials in Fairfax County, Va., began using online social studies texts in nearly all middle and high schools this year. They also are working to provide equal access for disadvantaged students outside of the school building, a common concern in many districts that are considering making the switch.
