For the first time, scientists have sequenced the entire genome of an ancient pathogen, in this case Black Death, the plague that killed 50 million Europeans over four years in the mid-1300s. Using this technology, scientists can map other pathogens, past and present, comparing the them to identify the changes that render them more or less virulent, and to find chinks in the virus' armor that may be exploited by vaccine technology.
