Flu researchers used Twitter to monitor people's feelings about vaccinations in 2009 and 2010 and found that positive Twitter buzz around the vaccine in a region correlated with more people getting their shots. That could provide a timely data source to help predict disease outbreaks and create tailored educational campaigns, the researchers say. "You can observe how people feel about certain things in a real-world context," says Marcel Salathe, a biologist at Penn State University.
