The U.S. nuclear energy industry is among the world's most highly regulated sectors, and it is renowned for reliable and safe operations, writes former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman, who is now co-chairwoman of the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition. Over the years, nuclear plant operators have strengthened safety precautions to prevent radioactive leaks and constantly plan for natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks. The industry has also started applying the lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear incident in Japan, Whitman writes.
