Employees who are worried about job security aren't likely to take the risks necessary for innovation, Ron Ashkenas writes. That can happen when organizations emphasize growing and cutting expenses at the same time. Instead, managers need to encourage their teams to share ideas and create opportunities to experiment with new ways of getting work done. "Most important, make it explicit that failure is acceptable as long as something is learned," Ashkenas writes.
