In Astoria, Ore., teachers meet once each week in professional learning communities to collaborate and discuss effective teaching strategies. The meetings are used to track students' progress and develop consistent practices and goals among teachers. "At the end of the day, you're just tired and preparing for the next day," said fourth-grade teacher Ramona Hunter. "The dedicated time Thursdays lets us look at common curriculum goals. It really gives us the same language."
