Children who receive second-generation antipsychotic drugs were more than four times as likely to develop diabetes as those who were not on psychotropic medications, according to a study in Pediatrics. Researchers examined 9,636 children ages 5 to 18 and found that the rate of diabetes was 3.23 cases per 1,000 person-years in children on antipsychotics, compared with only 0.76 cases in those who were not on psychotropic treatments.
