Boomer demand for sustainable and walkable communities is one of the motivations behind the Oberlin Project, which in collaboration with the New America Foundation and the Defense Department sees communities that can generate their own food and energy as a key to improving the nation. Environmental studies professor David Orr leads the project, which is trying to transform the Rust Belt city of Oberlin, Ohio, into such a sustainable community.
