A South San Francisco, Calif., elementary school is in the second year of a pilot program that seeks to increase parental involvement. Parents meet each week for seven weeks at the PTA School Smarts Parent Academy, where they learn how to take a more active role in their children's education. Before enrolling, parents at the predominantly Hispanic school often were intimidated by the language barrier, but officials say they have seen a spike in involvement.
