Type 2 diabetes patients are twice as likely to develop dementia three to five years after being diagnosed with depression compared with their nondepressed counterparts, experts reported in the Archives of General Psychiatry. Researchers studied more than 19,000 California residents with diabetes and found that just over 2% of those who had both diabetes and depression developed dementia over the study period, compared with 1% of patients who only had diabetes.
