Two fourth-graders at Jaime Escalante Elementary School in Cudahy, Calif., spearheaded a program that allows students who do not eat all of their lunch to put leftovers on a "common table" so they can be donated to families in need. The girls counted and charted how much food was being wasted and wrote a letter to the school district's food-services director asking for permission to donate unopened leftovers.
