While most people think of dogs in association with heartworm disease, cats can also contract it, resulting in adult worms in their heart and blood vessels. Monthly topical or oral heartworm preventative medication is recommended for cats because it's difficult to detect heartworm disease in cats, there is no treatment available for infected cats, and infections cause illness and death in some cases.
