Why has the Navajo Nation grown while other American Indian tribes have struggled? The answer relates in part to the group's geographical isolation, which provided some protection from the reach of U.S., Spanish and Mexican armies, according to Jared Diamond and Ronan Arthur, both geographers at the University of California, Los Angeles. The rugged nature of Navajo land also discouraged white settlers from claiming it, they note.
