The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services is training volunteer firefighters on how to battle propane and natural gas fires at the state Firefighting Academy. The 250-hour program, which also covers topics such as hazardous-material spills, consists of classroom discussions and hands-on sessions. The participants receive the same level of training that full-time firefighters get at the academy, but the program is spread out over six months.
