White House officials say President Barack Obama will send a request to Congress this week to raise the national debt limit $1.2 trillion, to $16.4 trillion. The deal reached in August contemplates this request, so it isn't likely to spark another protracted debate, but the move could indicate that the new debt ceiling may be reached before November. This would force the Treasury to engage in accounting maneuvers to push off the need to request another debt-ceiling increase until after the 2012 election.
